Ten riders from the Briton stock seat team made the trek from Albion to West Virginia for an IHSA show that was a little bit different than the regional shows they are accustomed to. The Mountaineer Invitational was held in Reedsville, WV on Dec. 1 and was hosted by West Virginia University.
The biggest difference for the riders at the invitational was that the results did not count towards any IHSA team or individual standings. However it was a great opportunity for the Albion riders to experience a show outside their region and to get to know riders from different areas of the country. Ten riders from the Albion team were able to attend, creating two teams of five riders.
Some of the standout riders included Chelsea Weiss (Manchester/Chelsea) who won third place in her novice horsemanship division. Team co-captain Amanda Douglas (Cheboygan/Cheboygan Area) got a callback for one of her individual open rides. Katie Petchell (Pinckney/Pinckney Community) came away with a fourth place in team open. Both Douglas and Petchell were able to represent Albion in both the open and reining divisions.
Showing impressive calm for a first year collegiate rider, Kate Sears (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor-Huron) picked up fourth place in intermediate horsemanship. Fellow teammate and co-captain Hannah Pankratz (Bad Axe/Bad Axe) grabbed the sixth place ribbon in advanced horsemanship.
Says Pankratz, "It was a really nice opportunity to compete with other schools outside of our region."
