June 12, 2013
Albion College has announced the selection of Dow Corning executive J. Donald Sheets, '82, as chair of the College's Board of Trustees beginning July 1, 2013. Sheets succeeds outgoing chair Paul Tobias, '73, who remains on the board.
Sheets currently serves as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Dow Corning Corp., headquartered in Midland, as well as president of the company's North American operations. He is responsible for the company's financial health, including strategic planning and investment strategies implemented as part of global operations. Sheets also directs the company's compliance and ethics programs for North America. He joined Dow Corning in 1982 and has held a number of executive positions within the company.
Sheets joined Albion's board in 2006 and has served as chair of its institutional advancement committee, along with being on the executive, investment and infrastructure committees. He is part of a legacy of service as Albion board chair that includes Midland business leaders Carl Gerstacker (chair, 1977-1983) and John Ludington, ’51 (chair, 1983-1989).
Sheets also serves as a director for the Midland Center for the Arts, Wolverine Bank, Tri-Star Trust Bank and MidMichigan Health. He earned an M.B.A., with a concentration in operations management, from the University of Michigan.
With the announcement of Sheets' accession to board chair, Albion College President Donna Randall affirmed the contributions of outgoing chair Paul Tobias, '73. A member of the board since 1996, Tobias served as board chair for the past five years and will continue to serve as a College trustee.
