More than 120 student-athletes from Albion College have been named to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Academic Honor Roll for their performance in the classroom during the 2008-2009 academic year.
In all, 121 Britons earned MIAA Academic Honor Roll recognition, which covers 18 varsity sports and the athletic training education program. To be listed on the Academic Honor Roll, the student-athlete must have earned a varsity letter in a sport and maintained a 3.5 grade point average or better for the entire school year.
Nine Albion squads (men's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, women's golf, women's soccer, women's swimming & diving, women's tennis, women's track & field, and volleyball) earned MIAA Team GPA awards for achieving a 3.3 GPA for the 2008-2009 academic year.
The Albion College women's track & field team enjoyed a remarkable 2009 season. Chelsea Anthony became the first Briton to advance to the NCAA Division III Championships since 1986 when she popped a school record throw of 143 feet in the discus in May, Dori Williams won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title in the 100-meter hurdles, and sprinter Samantha Ritter lowered the school records in the 100 and 200 and anchored the school record 400 relay team.
The NCAA Championships turned out to be a learning experience for Anthony who was just six feet shy of advancing to the finals. Bobby Lee, Albion's director of news & sports information, takes you ‘Inside the Briton Huddle' with a video review of Anthony's trip to Marietta, Ohio, for the national meet.
