Several community champions and College boosters, including trustee Dr. Samuel Shaheen, ’88, will be on hand as Albion College celebrates its 2018 Commencement on Saturday, May 5, at 1 p.m. from the steps of Kresge Gymnasium on the College Quadrangle.
Physician and entrepreneur Sam Shaheen, ’88, will deliver the Commencement address and receive an honorary doctorate. Currently serving as executive director of Medical Education Partners and professor of surgery at the College of Medicine at Central Michigan University, Shaheen is also president and CEO of Saginaw-based Shaheen Development, which initiated the development and construction of the Ludington Center and Courtyard Marriott hotel in downtown Albion. The hotel opened last month, following the January 2017 completion of Ludington. A member of Albion College’s Board of Trustees since 2011, Shaheen is also a founding member of the Albion Reinvestment Corporation.
Albion will also award honorary doctorates to history professor Wesley Dick and his wife, historian Leslie Keller Dick, and community and business leaders Bill and Karen (Knudson) Dobbins, both 1974 graduates of Albion College.
Additionally, the Briton Medallion will be presented to 1953 alumni Bruce and Peggy (Sale) Kresge. The Briton Medallion is awarded to alumni or friends who have made significant and sustained contributions to the College, including through financial or volunteer service, support, commitment and advocacy. Bruce Kresge served as a College trustee for 27 years, and he and his wife, Peggy, held leadership positions on the Liberal Arts at Work campaign. The Science Complex’s Bruce A. Kresge Hall was dedicated in 2006. (The family also provided the funds to build Stanley S. Kresge Gymmansium in 1925.)
Albion College Commencement is free and open to the public, except in the case of inclement weather, when tickets will be required. For more information, see www.albion.edu/commencement, or contact the Campus Events office at 517/629-0242.
