Earn an Experiential Certificate in: Clinical Care

Description

The Wilson Medical  Institute offers an Experiential Certificate in Clinical Care. Earning a certificate in clinical care ensures students gain hands-on patient care experience and develop a caregiving mindset while working in clinical settings. In addition to completing a certification program in CNA, scribe, or phlebotomy, students will gain meaningful job shadowing and community service experience, providing students opportunities to explore different careers in healthcare. Students begin this program by participating in purpose workshops before starting formal content below.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this certificate, students will be able to:

  • Convey health-related information to members of a care team. 
  • Apply training to hands-on experience.
  • Describe the impact of health professionals roles & responsibilities on patient health outcomes.

Purpose Courses

Students will choose academic courses through Albion College in consultation with their certificate advisor. Courses should introduce issues relevant to Clinical Care.

The following courses are recommendations. Other courses may be approved by the Director of the Wilson Institute for Medicine.

  • PSYC 247: Drug, Brain, & Behavior
  • PSYC 265: Abnormal Psychology
  • ANTHRO 279: Global Health
  • CHEM 352: Medicinal Chemistry
  • KIN 206: Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries
  • BIOL 371: Pathophysiology

Professional Development

Professional development opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Workshops, primarily offered through the Wilson Institute for Medicine and programs within SPP
  • Guest speakers 

Successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Phlebotomy, or Medical Scribe training program 

  • Successful completion of Wilson Institute for Medicine badge: Interprofessional Healthcare Collaboration
  • BLS/CPR certification course

Experiential Learning

Students will design or select the appropriate number of experiential learning hours, including community engaged experiential learning hours, for their catalog year.

Experiential learning opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Clinical job shadowing
  • Clinical employment as: CNA, phlebotomist, medical scribe
  • Community engagement 
    • Kids Cardiac Life Support
    • Senior Care Partners PACE
    • Albion Health and Wellness Action Team 

This program promotes student and staff/faculty interaction through group discussions. Program objectives are evaluated through pre and post assessments and student reflections.
