Beau Brockett, ’19, was one of 12 Michigan college students to be awarded a $1,000 scholarship earlier this month by the Michigan Press Association (MPA) Foundation. The English-Creative Writing major from Richmond is the managing editor of The Pleiad, the Albion College student newspaper.

Mick McCabe, who spent 46 years carving out a special niche at the Detroit Free Press, didn’t attend Albion College. But his respect and love for the school runs deep nonetheless thanks to the fact that two of his kids graduated from Albion. And that’s why, at his retirement roast in May, McCabe earmarked the $3,500 in proceeds to Albion’s journalism program. “I really liked everything about Albion,” he said.

Emerita professor of education Nancy Held passed away February 4 at Providence Hospital in Novi at the age of 84. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, February 11, at 10:30 a.m. in Albion College’s Goodrich Chapel.

An English and French major at Albion College, Dana Lee, ’02 (far left), decided to try something new three years ago and the result was becoming part of a team that developed The Founders, a documentary about the early years of the Ladies Professional Golf Association that is screening at film festivals around the country. “It was one of those times in my life when you raise your hand and say, ‘I’ll try to help,'” she said.

A renowned scholar of American literature and a lion of the Albion College English Department for nearly three decades, Dr. John Edward Hart, professor emeritus, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2011 at the age of 94.
