Finish senior year early — or take the opportunity to travel in South America? Senior Leonard Ciemniecki, ’20, had a big decision to make, one that was more challenging because he didn’t want to miss his fourth swim season on Albion’s team. The Gerstacker Institute arranged an internship arranged for Leonard to take the fall 2019 semester off so he could fulfill his travel dreams.

David Egnatuck, ’71 had a bucket list item to climb Machu Picchu, so for his 70 birthday he and his wife Mary Ann traveled to Peru with their friends Ron, ’82 and Ruth Lessard. They contacted Leonard, who was preparing to leave for Peru, to let him know that they had open spots in their hiking expedition and invited him and his sisters to meet up with the Albion alums. They spent five days hiking and camping in the Andes Mountains, swapping Albion stories, and creating lifelong memories. But South America wasn’t the end of the story.

Leonard received a job offer at EY in San Francisco after graduation. He reached out to his former traveling companion, Ron Lessard, for housing recommendations in the Bay Area. The Lessards generously invited Leonard to be their house guest until he was better acquainted with the area and could find the perfect apartment.

Leonard says that he fully reaped the benefits of his Albion College connection and is so thankful and grateful for the generosity of these two alumni couples. He looks forward to networking and helping Albion students himself — paying it forward.
