It’s one of those “who would have thought?” encounters: Brandon Fisher, ’21 (left), and Tom Jurasek, ’08, first worked together in Albion’s Harrington Elementary School Mentoring program, when Jurasek was a volunteer from the Albion College men’s basketball team and Fisher was in second grade. That relationship didn’t last (Fisher only vaguely remembers it), but nonetheless come June the two will work together again, as Fisher joins Jurasek and five other Albion alumni on the team at Jackson-based accounting firm Willis & Jurasek.

Harim “Sunny” Kim, ’20, who will graduate in May with degrees in business and music, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Mexico for 2020-21. A member of the Gerstacker and Ford institutes as well as the Brown Honors Program, Kim is Albion College’s 16th Fulbright recipient in the last 17 years.

A sociologist by training who officially joins Albion on July 1, the Carnegie Fellow is an international expert in the field of community engagement and brings from Brown University a passion for engaged scholarship and the public purpose of higher education.

Economics and Management Professor Vicki Baker will help support faculty development at University College Utrecht in The Netherlands from February 28 to March 13 as a Fulbright Specilaist. “This is now a global issue,” she says.

Maximilian Loria, ’21, a member of the Britons’ men’s soccer team, arrived at Albion College thinking he would prepare for a career in accounting. A marketing class in the recently completed spring semester may have changed his outlook, and he is using a summer internship at DTE Energy to help narrow his focus while making connections that will assist in his professional development.

Out of thousands of applicants and 100 interviewees, Josh Sannes, ’19, who graduated in May after majoring in finance in the Economics and Management Department, was offered and accepted a position with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as a financial institution specialist in Columbus, Ohio.

Albion College, along with four other schools in the Michigan Colleges Alliance, collaborated with Harvard Business School Online this spring to work on a research-based business project in a blended learning program. “This is what a liberal arts education is. … It was a perfect fit,” said Vicki Baker, professor of economics and management.

A microeconomist with research interests in the minimum wage and employment practices, JIm McCarley taught 41 years as a tenured professor and another 10 as an adjunct at Albion where he developed courses including Women in Economics, Econometrics, Armchair Economics (a First-Year seminar), and Great Issues in Social Sciences.
