The Wilson Institute for Medicine and Brown Honors Program member is one of just 12 students nationwide to win a 2021 Undergraduate Research Award from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
In an effort to assist students as they pursue their interest in medical careers, the Lisa and James Wilson Institute for Medicine is offering a unique post-baccalaureate certificate in pre-medical studies to students who have received their bachelor’s degree. “I hope it helps establish Albion as a leader in pre-medical education,” said Institute director Dr. Brad Rabquer
Albion College has been selected as one of five higher-ed institutions—and the only liberal arts college—to register students for All of Us, a medical project that aims for more inclusion, diversity and accuracy when it comes to treating patients.
Led by 1977 alumnus James Wilson, M.D. Ph.D., a renowned medical scientist, Albion College has launched an ambitious Comprehensive Public Health Initiative that will advance community conversation and understanding of the social, political, economic and public health dimensions of the coronavirus pandemic and is beginning work with students, staff, faculty and community members to address the ongoing toll of COVID-19.
Albion College’s Lisa and James Wilson Institute for Medicine aims to be part of finding a way forward during, and after, the coronavirus pandemic. One way is by offering public health options to pre-med students in the form of internships that offer real-world experience—like at Howard Brown Health in Chicago, where Lucretia Woods, ’21 (left), and Camari Jones, ’23, are serving as recently trained contact tracers in their hometown.
The aspiring physician assistant and member of the Albion College men’s golf team is using his semester off campus to learn directly from healthcare providers in a clinical setting. “My internship mostly consists of shadowing PAs,” Kapke says of his experience in the Methodist Hospital emergency department, “but I am also doing some small projects for the volunteer office at the hospital.”
Through a gift to their alma mater, Dr. James Wilson, ’77, and Lisa Wilson, ’79, have established the Lisa and James Wilson Institute for Medicine at Albion College. An evolution from the former Institute for Healthcare Professions, the Wilson Institute for Medicine will rethink and advance undergraduate teaching and preparation in a fast changing medical-education environment, providing Albion students with a competitive advantage in gaining entrance to top-tier medical schools and in their overall career paths.
Class of 2018 members Phoebe Dodge, Garrett Mason and Megan Reilly are the first Albion College graduates to earn admission to the Central Michigan University College of Medicine as part of the new cooperative agreement between the two institutions. “It’s a big win for Central and it’s a big win for Albion,” says Brad Rabquer, associate professor of biology and the director of Albion’s Institute for Healthcare Professions.
