For more than two decades—from the Bonta Center and across campus to her local community and recruitment territories, as well as among her higher-education admission peers—Mandy Dubiel has been a leader in Albion College’s continuing evolution as an exemplary and nationally ranked liberal arts college.
Since 2015, as director of admission, Dubiel has been at the forefront of an enrollment rebound that has welcomed more than 400 first-year students each year while maintaining a strong academic profile of entering classes. Additionally, Albion students are coming from more parts of the country and world (a 90% Michigan student population is now approximately 75%) and are more socioeconomically diverse (from 12% underrepresented students in 2014-15 to 31% in 2018-19).
Amid ongoing, well-reported challenges being felt by all small private colleges, Albion College on October 1 formally recognized Dubiel for her successful efforts by promoting her to Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management. In her new post, Dubiel will work closely with Vice President for Enrollment Management Hernan Bucheli on developing a new enrollment management plan to shape and recruit future Albion classes.
“Albion College has always supported my career growth,” said Dubiel, whose roles since joining the admission team in 1996, soon after receiving her B.A. from Western Michigan University, have included administrative assistant, tour guide coordinator, event coordinator, athletic recruitment coordinator, associate director of financial aid and director of admission operations. “I look forward to this next step in my career and working with Hernan to create a strategic enrollment and marketing plan that will position Albion for continued growth and success.”
“By any measure, Mandy is a proven leader. She makes the trains run,” Bucheli said. “She has been an essential contributor to growing enrollment overall and of diverse student populations at Albion College. Her promotion is well deserved, and I look forward to tapping into Mandy’s expertise as we continue to shape and grow enrollments for Albion.”
Born and raised in Albion, Dubiel for many years has been a leader in the community as well. She is currently vice president of the Albion Community Foundation and will continue to serve as recruitment lead for the College’s Build Albion Fellows Program.
“Mandy’s dedication and passion for both her hometown and for Albion College is truly inspiring,” said President Mauri Ditzler. “She brings a tenacity to her work that is contagious and which motivates not only her Admission team but faculty and staff across the College in the recruitment effort. I’m excited to watch Mandy and Hernan collaborate as they craft and execute strategies in the years ahead.”
In the heart of college-fair season, and as applications roll in for the Class of 2024, Dubiel allowed herself a brief moment to reflect on her contributions and impact. For example, she noted that she recruited Dustin Beurer, ’05, who is currently in his first season as head coach of the Britons football team. And the first Build Albion Fellows graduated last May.
“There are pretty amazing students I’ve recruited who are now doing some pretty awesome stuff,” Dubiel said. “We are all in this field because we love impacting students, making a difference for students, and I’m excited to see this next chapter unfold for Albion College.”
