Moon admirers and the curious invited to Albion College on Sept. 14th

Whether you’re an avid Moon admirer or just celestially curious, the public is invited to Albion College on Sept. 14th. to participate in this year’s International Observe the Moon Night.

Weather permitting, observers will gather on the Palenske Science Building roof, from 6:30 pm to 8 pm, to learn about lunar science and exploration, take part in celestial observations, and honor cultural and personal connections to the Moon. For more information, visit the observation website.

“It’s always fun to gather as a community at a telescope facility, to observe the sky and learn a bit of astronomy. On the 14th, we’ll feature the Moon,” said Nicolle Zellner, chair of the physics department and the Herbert H. & Grace A. Dow Trustees’ Professor in the Sciences at Albion College. “With NASA’s plan to return humans to the Moon with the Artemis program, this will be a great night for the world to gather and collectively appreciate Earth’s nearest planetary neighbor. The Moon will be almost full and features like impact craters will be prominent through the telescope.”

This observing event (free and open to the public) is supported by the NASA CASA Moon grant received by Albion College in 2023.

International Observe the Moon Night has been a world-wide event since 2010. It aims to raise awareness about NASA’s lunar science and exploration program and encourages people to learn about the Moon and space science.
