Guest Speaker/Workshops

Are you expecting to miss one or more of your classes this semester due to a professional or personal reason? Instead of canceling class, consider offering one of the following presentations.

Presentations

All presentations/workshops are offered by a variety of campus partners. They will work with students to discuss successful strategies in college and beyond. These presentations/workshops provide faculty with an opportunity to continue the education process in the event that they are unable to be in class. This is an excellent option while faculty are attending conferences or during other unforeseen situations.

Career Development

Values Clarification Toggle Accordion

This presentation uses comparisons of professions that are not commonly paired. Students realize the significance of their own values when they discover how important they are when evaluating careers. This is a highly-interactive and group-centered process that encourages debate to discuss the merits of different careers, synthesizing their discussion, and presenting to the class. There are two options that include using the Values Cards or an interactive process of comparing professions.

Interviewing Toggle Accordion

Participants will understand how to process interview questions and how to answer in commonly accepted and desired formats. A focus of this presentation is to teach behavioral responses to questions, how to brand one’s self, and to generally be seen in the most professional view as possible. This workshop can take one of two forms where one is more focused on delivering information about interviewing and the other is focused on interview practice among students in the class.

Job Search Using Handshake Toggle Accordion

Students will be introduced to navigating Handshake which includes completing a profile, applying to on-campus jobs, searching and applying for jobs and internships, requesting on-campus interviews, enrolling in resume books, and researching careers and companies.

Marketing Your Liberal Arts Degree Toggle Accordion

This is an interactive presentation where students learn about the value of a liberal arts education and how to market to employers and graduate schools. Students will develop an understanding of what employers are looking for (backed by national research) and how the skills they are developing at Albion College closely match these. They will also learn how to communicate this in application materials.

Focus2Career Toggle Accordion

Focus2Career includes a variety of different self-assessments. These include interest, values, skills, academic preparedness, experiential activities, and career readiness. The Career and Internship Center will help students learn more about themselves and how this relates to careers and Albion majors and minors. If choosing this option, please keep in mind that all first-year students take the Work Interest Inventory in their First Year Seminar.

Resume Toggle Accordion

A popular presentation to help participants learn the basics of resume writing in a way that will help them understand commonly accepted formats and styles. The presenter will provide information and discussion to help them understand and critically navigate the ambiguous world of resume writing.
