The Dean Hall Experience

Dean Hall has historic significance to the Albion College community. It was the longstanding home of the Dean Hall women’s cooperative, where residents planned, cooked, and ate together regularly, worked in a cooperative and respectful manner, and managed the building’s custodial needs collectively.

For the 2024-2025 Academic Year, Dean Hall is home to I-Space, The Modern Languages and Cultures (MLAC) Living Learning Community.

The community has a large kitchen, dining room, and living area where students often host gatherings. Laundry facilities are also located in the hall.

I-Space: Modern Languages and Cultures (MLAC) Living Learning Community

I-Space Community Application, 2024-2025 Academic Year (eRezLife form)

I-Space is intended for students pursuing language development and global interactions. Students majoring or minoring in a modern language are required to live for at least a semester in I-Space. Students interested in developing language and cultural skills or in related programs are strongly encouraged to consider the benefits of living in the LLC as well, as hands-on and experiential learning is deeply formative and allows for additional practice beyond the classroom. Residence in the house will include required program attendance and engagement. These initiatives will be fun, profound, and will form powerful relationships and self-awareness.

This living area is designated for students studying the French, German, or Spanish language. Its goals are to promote second-language acquisition and to encourage international awareness among its residents and the campus at large. Selection for residency in this living area is based on a declared major or minor in French, German, or Spanish, previous or current participation in an off-campus program of study in any country where French, German, or Spanish is spoken, and previous or current study of foreign language. Students pledge to speak the intended language within their living quarters. Eligible students can earn .25 unit for residency in I-Space for one semester and active participation in weekly programs in the student’s respective language house as well as in cultural events for all Fiske residents.

I-Space residents are selected on a semester-by-semester basis by the Modern Languages and Cultures LLC Selection Committee. Students interested in living in I-Space must apply through the I-Space application form available in eRezLife each semester. Approved individuals will be assigned to a specific room and roommate by the Modern Languages and Cultures LLC Selection Committee.

Important Reminders:

  1. First-year students are not eligible for I-Space residency.
  2. Fiske House cannot support window air conditioners. Please email [email protected] to see the list of housing options with central air or capability for approved window air conditioning units.
