Albion College placed 60th out of 1,063 private four-year U.S. colleges and universities in student-services spending for 2017-18 in a ranking published earlier this month by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Within Michigan, Albion is ranked No. 1 of any private college or university.

The quality of an Albion College education is being recognized in a new LendEDU ranking of the Most Desired Colleges of the Last Decade. The list focuses on 1,253 four-year schools, consisting of private and public colleges and universities, from the 2008-09 and 2018-19 academic years. Albion places 457 overall, and No. 3 among the 13 nationally recognized liberal arts institutions that comprise the Great Lakes Colleges Association.

When Deborah Kanter, the John S. Ludington endowed professor of history and department chair, set out to complete her 20-year journey to chronicle Mexican Catholic parishes in Chicago, her goal was simple. “I wanted to write a book that friends could give their moms for Christmas,” she said. “I wanted to write a book for the general public.”

Albion placed 115th out of 1,484 U.S. colleges and universities in the 2020 ranking by College Factual, which looks for the best values so students can avoid college debt. “This acknowledgment of Albion College’s value, academic excellence and affordability clearly underscores the distinctiveness of Albion College as an outstanding liberal arts institution,” said Hernan Bucheli, vice president for enrollment management.

Albion College is pleased to announce four recipients of the 2020

Albion College is pleased to announce that it will honor and recognize seven Britons this spring during the annual Alumni Awards dinner and ceremony in Baldwin Hall.

Due to public health concerns related to COVID-19, the event, originally scheduled for April 17, will be postponed to April 16, 2021. When those details are set, additional announcements will be made.

For Darrell Williams, ’77, leadership skills seem to have followed him since his days as a youngster in Inkster, Mich., eventually settling around him like a cloak. “When I grew up I was always watching leaders and I was behind leaders watching them and seeing what they did,” he says. “When the time came for me to be a leader, I knew how to step into that position.”

Dannia Edwards, ’83, who in 2019 became the first African American female judge in Minnesota’s First Judicial District, presented the keynote address to the Bohm Theatre audience January 28 during the 2020 Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation and Community Celebration. Judge Edwards noted that while African Americans have already seen the election of the first black U.S. president and a new naval aircraft carrier named for Pearl Harbor hero Doris Miller, the country still struggles with prejudice and discrimination.
