All enrolled students holding an F1, J1, or J2 immigration status are required to maintain health insurance while at Albion College, per Albion’s Student Health Insurance policy, and US Department of State regulation. Albion College charges these international students the cost of a health insurance premium with their semester’s tuition each term, and sends the insurance premiums to UnitedHealthcare on their behalf.

Log into the UnitedHealthcare Albion  portal with credentials you receive after enrolling in classes at Albion College. Use the portal to print your insurance card, file claims, and learn more about the policy.

Coverage at a Glance

  • Deductibles: $100 per insured person per policy year at preferred providers.  $500 per insured person per policy year at out-of-network providers.
  • Co-payments/co-insurance: 80% of allowed amount for covered medical benefits at preferred providers; 70% of allowed amount for covered medical benefits at out-of-network providers.

2024/25 Policy Coverage dates are:

  • Fall 2024: August 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024

Already have a policy that equals or exceeds Albion’s International Student Health Insurance policy?  You may request to waive Albion College’s plan by providing proof of comparable coverage. To request a waiver, confirm that your policy meets the standards below. Email Melissa Sommers ([email protected]) a copy of your policy to make the request.

Waivers must be submitted EACH semester of enrollment. You may only request a waiver during the following waiver periods, having not attempted to use the policy.

  • Fall 2024: August 1, 2024 – September 1, 2024
  • Spring/ Summer 2024: December 1 – January 20, 2025

Health Care Coverage Requirements for International Students/ Waiver Eligibility.

Health Care Coverage for International Students must be provided through a compliant individual or employer health plan that meets the minimum federal requirements for coverage for certain foreign exchange visitors set forth in 22 CFR 62.14 (b) and (c) and (d).

  1. Such a plan must provide coverage that, at a minimum:
    • Provides the Essential Minimum Benefits required by the PPACA with no annual limits;
    • Contains no exclusions for pre-existing conditions;
    • Covers 100% of Preventive Care as defined by the PPACA;
    • Imposes a deductible that does not exceed $500 per accident or illness;
    • Imposes no provisions for co-insurance that exceed 25% of the covered benefits per accident or illness; and
    • Is underwritten by an insurance carrier that meets the requirement of 22 CFR 62.14(d)(1).
  2. Evacuation/Repatriation Coverage for International Students must provide coverage for:
    • Repatriation expenses in the amount of no less than $25,000; and
    • Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the insured to the insured’s home country of no less than $50,000.

A waiver will be considered for an International Student for any semester of enrollment in which the student is:

  • Able to establish that the student has coverage that is backed by the full faith and credit of the government of the exchange visitor’s home country.
  • Sponsored by the US Government or another sponsoring entity that has guaranteed payment of all health expenses and repatriation and evacuation expenses in writing.
  • Able to establish that the student is enrolled in health care coverage through another source that meets the requirement of #1 and/or # 2 above; or

Definitions

Essential Minimum Benefits: A comprehensive package of benefits and services that must be included in a PPACA compliant health care, including:

  • Ambulatory patient services
  • Emergency services
  • Hospitalization (such as surgery)
  • Pregnancy, maternity, and newborn care (care for a mother and baby before and after the baby is born)
  • Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment, counseling and psychotherapy
  • Prescription drugs
  • Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices
  • Laboratory services
  • Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management

Evacuation and Repatriation Coverage Specific additional coverage provided to pay the expenses associated with the cost of medical evacuation of an insured and the return of the remains of a deceased insured to the home country of the insured.

Preventative Care Medical care that must be offered to participants in health coverage with no out of pocket costs to the plan enrollee.

Short Term Limited Duration Plans or other health plans created expressly for the purpose of providing coverage to international students and/or non-immigrant visa holders do not meet the requirements for Health Care Coverage.
