Parental and Family Leave

Policy Area: Human Resources

Policy Title: Parental and Family Leave

Submitted Date: January 2021

Effective Date: March 1 2021

Submitted By: Human Resources

Approved By: Cabinet

Policy Owner: Human Resources

Scope

Full-time salaried employees

Policy

All staff employees may also request a leave of absence without salary of up to 12 weeks to care for an immediate family member with a serious health condition. As part of our Family and Medical Leave procedures, all eligible staff employees are entitled to up to 2 weeks of paid leave per fiscal year to care for an immediate family member with a serious health condition, or to care for a newly born child or newly adopted child under six years of age. Paid parental or family leave may only be utilized during times when an employee would normally be working and paid for that work (e.g. a 9-month employee may not use this benefit in the months when they would not have been working). When on parental or family leave, employees may not engage in conduct that is inconsistent with the need for such leave including paid work for another employer or paid self-employment without the prior approval from Human Resources.

Procedure

Eligible employees submit all necessary paperwork to Human Resources for requesting a family or medical leave. When the leave is initially requested, Human Resources will inform the employee of how much family/parental leave is available. Time off, in excess of available parental/family leave pay will be unpaid or covered by vacation time if available.
