Requirements for Major

The philosophy major consists of a minimum of eight units: one course in each of the areas that fall within the core, one capstone research seminar, and four electives, at least two of which are at the 300-level.

The Core (3 units):

Logic:
PHIL 107: Logic and Critical Reasoning (1 Unit)
History of Philosophy:
PHIL 211: Ancient Philosophy (1 Unit)
OR
PHIL 212: Modern Philosophy (1 Unit)
Ethics:
PHIL 201: Ethics (1 Unit)
OR
PHIL 206: Contemporary Moral Problems (1 Unit)

Capstone Research Seminar:

PHIL 402: Capstone Research Seminar (1 Unit)

Electives:

Four additional units in philosophy, at least two of which are at the 300-level.

Notes:

The department also recommends PHIL 207, Symbolic Logic, for students who have interest in pursuing graduate school in philosophy.
All courses for the major must be taken for a numerical grade and cannot be taken credit/no credit.
Directed studies may be used to fulfill major requirements with permission of the department chair.
